Discover The Rajdoot

If you’ve ever wandered down Fleet Road in Hampstead and caught the warm scent of toasted spices drifting through the air, chances are you were close to The Rajdoot at 104 Fleet Rd, London NW3 2QX, United Kingdom. I’ve dined here several times over the past year, both casually with friends and once for a small birthday gathering, and each visit has reinforced why this Indian restaurant holds such a steady reputation among locals.

The first thing you notice is the atmosphere. It’s relaxed, unfussy, and genuinely welcoming. The staff greet you like regulars, even if it’s your first time. That kind of hospitality isn’t accidental; it reflects a long-standing tradition in Indian dining culture where service is as important as flavour. According to research from the UKHospitality industry body, diners consistently rank attentive service and authenticity as top factors influencing repeat visits. From my experience, this place delivers on both.

The menu is broad without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find classic curries-chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, and saag paneer-alongside tandoori specialties and freshly baked naan straight from the clay oven. During my last visit, I tried their king prawn bhuna, cooked slowly with onions, tomatoes, and a balanced blend of garam masala. The spices were layered rather than overpowering, which shows technical skill in the kitchen. Balancing heat, acidity, and sweetness is no small feat; it requires understanding how turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chilli interact during the cooking process. The chef clearly respects those fundamentals.

One thing I appreciate is how they handle spice levels. When a friend of mine, who prefers milder dishes, asked for guidance, the waiter carefully explained the difference between a korma and a madras-not just in terms of heat, but flavour profile. That kind of clarity builds trust. It also reflects an understanding that Indian cuisine is more than just “spicy food.” The Food Standards Agency regularly highlights the importance of transparent communication in hospitality, especially regarding ingredients and allergens. Here, staff are open and informative, which matters.

The tandoori mixed grill deserves a special mention. The smoky char on the chicken and seekh kebabs comes from traditional high-temperature clay oven cooking. This method seals in juices while creating that slightly crisp exterior. It’s a technique rooted in centuries-old North Indian culinary practice, yet it feels perfectly at home in modern London dining culture.

Beyond the food, the location adds to the appeal. Situated in Hampstead, close to local shops and residential streets, it’s easy to reach and ideal for both casual dinners and small group celebrations. I’ve noticed a mix of long-time neighbourhood residents and younger professionals filling the tables, which speaks volumes about its cross-generational appeal. Online reviews consistently praise the consistency of the dishes and the friendly team, and from what I’ve seen, those comments feel accurate rather than exaggerated.

Portion sizes are generous without being excessive. Prices are fair for the area, especially considering the quality of ingredients and preparation. While it’s not positioned as a luxury fine-dining establishment, it doesn’t try to be. Instead, it confidently delivers authentic flavours, fresh ingredients, and welcoming service-three things that keep people coming back.

Of course, like any busy local restaurant, peak hours can mean a lively, sometimes noisy atmosphere. If you’re looking for a super quiet, candlelit setting, it’s worth booking an earlier slot. Still, that buzz is part of its charm. You feel like you’re part of a neighbourhood tradition rather than just another table.

In a city packed with curry houses, standing out requires consistency and genuine care. Based on repeated visits and conversations with other diners, this Fleet Road favourite manages exactly that. The combination of a thoughtfully curated menu, attentive staff, and reliable execution makes it a solid choice whether you’re craving a comforting takeaway-style curry or planning a relaxed evening out in North London.

  • Local Gem!!! The Rajdoot has been delighting local residents since it was established in 1964. Fantastic food, fresh ingredients and clearly a thoughtful kitchen. The food is thankfully matched by perfectly attentive and kind service… thank you Mr. Elin!! Stop and eat… you won’t regret it

  • It was a great restaurant, fantastic service and they were so friendly to us and right to hand if we wanted anything. Mr Elin in particular was a great server and we'd definitely return. Some of the food like the naans were a little sweet but otherwise it was a great visit. Thanks very much! Also careful with the three chilli spice...

  • Had a very lovely meal here this evening, when we got it was just one couple and us, and after 30 mins it got quite busy, which is a great sign, we had the lamb chops tp start which was very tasty and easy to eat! We also ordered a garlic & cheese naan and peswari, which was delightful. My partner had the korai chicken, which had a little heat but plenty of flavour and i had the Mr naga which was very spicy but i love a hot curry was very tasty and nice, mr elin and staff were very attentive and accomadating and offered advice on the menu and recommemdations, our first time visit and would definetly go again Thank you for a great night

  • Ordered a ton of food for the family and everyone had nothing but good to say. The Tikka Masala is a little on the sweet side for my taste but nonetheless delicious. Biryani was topnotch. We ordered for takeout but whilst i was waiting for the food. The staff were being incredibly nice and welcoming.

  • Came here for a family outing, and had a fab night! Both the Bengali Fish and Lamb Vindaloo were exceptionally good! Our fave waiter was Mr Elin; he gave a fantastic recommendation to my daughter, was extremely efficient, and finished the night off with some complimentary baileys
